His book had gone through nine editions and aided the passage of the British Slave Trade Act of 1807.Įquiano was born on October 16, 1745, in Eboe province (presently southern Nigeria). When he published his autobiography entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, he helped abolish the African slave trade. He was specifically active in the anti-slave trade movement during the 1780s. Known as Gustavus Vassa most of his life, Equiano was a member of the Sons of Africa, an abolitionist group made up of renowned Africans living in Britain. He finds her dead body and the remains of the Cretan god (described as a bull-headed sea serpent), and realises that she has been killed by the god's high priest Minotaurus to prevent Minea from returning and tell the god is dead. A while after Minea has been escorted into the mountain cave, Sinuhe enters the cave to search for Minea. In the evening before Minea should enter the mountain cave, they marry each other unofficially. Sinuhe is horrified by this and fears that he will not see Minea again. Minea has grown up with the mission to sacrifice herself as a virgin to the local bull god who lives in a mountain cave at the sea. It is a full-bodied re-creation of a largely forgotten era in the world’s history: an Egypt when pharaohs. They don’t remember the title but when they describe the story it is invariably ‘The Last Question’. Frequently someone writes to ask me if I can write them the name of a story, which they think I may have written, and tell them where to find it. Then, too, it has had the strangest effect on my readers. This sort of thing endears any story to any writer. Why is it my favorite? For one thing I got the idea all at once and didn’t have to fiddle with it and I wrote it in white-heat and scarcely had to change a word. ‘The Last Question’ is my personal favorite, the one story I made sure would not be omitted from this collection. In The Best of Isaac Asimov, published in 1973, he says: The first was easier to track down it’s on Wikipedia with a date. Here, for example, are two comments I remember having read about what is definitely one of his two most famous stories, The Last Question: I like tracking down quotes, but find it terribly hard to track down quotes by Asimov about his writing: there are so many anthologies, and so many comments he has made about a single story in different places. The Hero’s Journey is the story that Campbell claimed lies at the heart of every myth in every culture. Campbell, who Lucas would later call “my Yoda,” is the man who studied and chronicled a mythological pattern he called the Hero’s Journey-a pattern Lucas would later use as a template for his Star Wars films. It was the perfect venue for the man Lucas was there to see: Joseph Campbell.Ĭampbell was a Columbia University-educated mythologist whose work George Lucas had long admired and studied. In 1984, a young, dark-haired man named George Lucas took a seat at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, a beautiful, dome-shaped structured that hearkened back to the styles of ancient Greece and Rome. It is because of this connection not only to the future, but to the past, that Star Wars continues to captivate audiences to this day. Since May 25 th, 1977, Star Wars has been igniting the imaginations of viewers all over the world with its futuristic, neon-tinged take on what is actually a very old story archetype. |
